About BSG

A school rich in history at the centre of our community

Welcome to Bournemouth School for Girls, Dorset’s Highest Achieving State School (2022)

Headteacher’s Welcome

I am proud to be Headteacher of this thriving grammar school, serving Bournemouth and the surrounding area. With around 1200 girls, including 300 students in the sixth form, BSG is a dynamic and exciting community to work and learn in.

We are committed to providing the very best possible pastoral care and education for our pupils, whether in the classroom, on the sports field, in drama and music or in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. We are certainly a highly successful school with examination results at GCSE and A level consistently placing us as one of the top performing state schools in the country.

Whilst we are justifiably proud of our strong academic record, our aim is to provide a well-rounded and balanced educational environment in which every pupil has the opportunity to fully exploit her potential.

Above all we seek to help our girls develop the confidence, skills and desire to make a positive difference in the wider world. BSG offers an exceptional education in a calm, caring and friendly environment: find out more about us on our website, or even better, come and visit us!

A member of the South West Academic Trust

On 1st September 2009 our school joined the South West Academic Trust. The Trust has now expanded to include Exeter University, Colyton Grammar School, Devon, Torquay Boys’ and Torquay Girls’ Grammar Schools, Parkstone Grammar School, Poole Grammar School, South Wilts Grammar School in Salisbury, Devonport High School and Plymouth High School for Girls, and Churston Ferrers Grammar in Torbay. Membership of the Trust has already provided exciting new opportunities for pupils and staff and enabled us to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning for our students.

Teachers meet regularly to share best practice which they can bring back to their own school.

Other events include the meeting of heads of department and ‘Learning Walks’. These involve staff and students visiting lessons and becoming immersed in the life of another school for a day to bring new ideas about teaching and learning that we can implement at BSG.

Student activities include public speaking and debating competitions, challenge days, student voice conferences, Art competitions and other cross curricular work. The SWAT website lists all planned activities.
