The Music Department is based in our modern and spacious Performing Arts Centre. Facilities here include two specialist music classrooms, an IT room equipped with Sibelius and Cubase software and keyboards, 5 practice rooms where peripatetic music lessons take place, two drama studios and a large theatre space which seats 200. We also have a well-equipped recording studio run by a top-spec iMac and benefit from an excellent range of musical instruments for pupils’ use.
Music is taught to all pupils to the end of Year 9 (one hour per week), with strong uptake at both GCSE and A Level. We currently follow the Edexcel specification at both GCSE and A Level. At GCSE, we have two teaching groups. At A Level, there are groups in both Year 12 and Year 13. Outcomes at GCSE and A Level are strong and many students are entered for external instrumental and voice examinations with a high success rate. In 2022, our A Level class achieved 100% A or A* grades, with one pupil leaving us to study Music at Oxford and another to study at the Royal College of Music. In 2023, the department achieved a 100% A* to B pass rate, with two pupils leaving to pursue Music at HE level.
