BOURNEMOUTH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Admissions

A guide to our Year 7 entry admissions policy and process

Year 7 2024 Entry

Registration for 2024 Entry

Please note: the deadline for registering your daughter for the selection tests is 12 noon on Friday 8th September 2023

There is one set of selection tests for Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School for Girls, Parkstone Grammar School and Poole Grammar School (the ‘Consortium’). This will save children whose parents wish them to be considered for admission to more than one selective school in the Consortium from taking multiple tests for those schools.

All applicants to a Consortium School must complete a Registration Form to be eligible to sit the entrance tests. To sit the test at Bournemouth School for Girls (BSG) this September please complete our Online Registration Form.

The Online Registration Form for Selection Test at BSG link is here: ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM

To help support your registration please read the guide for our registration form here: PARENT REGISTRATION SUPPORT GUIDE

Girls will sit the entrance tests on Saturday 23rd September 2023 at either Bournemouth School for Girls or Parkstone Grammar School. The tests may only be taken once by any girl. Details of the tests and arrangements for the day will be sent to parents and students after Friday 15th September 2023. The results of the tests may be used to establish your daughter’s eligibility for a place at both Bournemouth School for Girls and Parkstone Grammar School.

Preparing for the entrance tests

ENTRANCE TESTS

  • Pupils seeking admission into Year 7 take tests in Mathematics, English and Verbal Reasoning.
  •  All tests are set to be appropriate for the pupils in their final year of the KS2 national
curriculum. It is acknowledged that candidates are unlikely to have covered all of the work that is tested — the tests take account of this

Mathematics (GL Assessment) – Time Allowed: 50 minutes

The Mathematics paper is based on work which candidates would normally cover during Key Stage 2 of the national curriculum. It covers most aspects of Key Stage 2, up to level 5, with some questions aimed at level 6.

English (GL Assessment) –  Time Allowed: 45 minutes

The English paper tests comprehension, vocabulary and punctuation.

Verbal Reasoning (GL Assessment) -Time Allowed: 50 minutes
This test is designed to analyse a pupil’s academic potential and indicate areas of strength or weakness.

GL Assessment Papers
For the three GL Assessment papers, questions are of a multiple-choice style, with candidates entering their answers on a pre-printed sheet. Scores achieved in these papers are standardised against national criteria by age.

All GL Assessment tests are designed to be taken to very strict time limits. Many pupils within a wide range of ability will be able to answer most of the questions, given sufficient time; our tests show a pupil’s ability to work accurately at speed, a vital aspect of their future work in a selective school. For this reason, no variation in this timing is permitted unless the applicant has a relevant statement of educational need. Any specific problems which may affect a girl’s performance should be drawn to the attention of the Access Arrangements Panel by submitting the Application for Access Arrangements form. The deadline for submitting this form is 12 noon on Monday 11th September 2023. The Access Arrangements Panel will take all such information into account when deciding on eligibility for entry to the school.

11+ Practice Papers
GL Assessment has produced a set of 11+ familiarisation papers covering Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics. These are available online for parents and students to download free of charge at https://www.gl-assessment.co.uk/information/11plus-practice-papers/
Once on the page you can click any of the links and the familiarisation papers will download.
Further packs of practice papers can be purchased from Amazon or on-line from
https://11plus.gl-assessment.co.uk

If there is any reason why your daughter cannot sit the entrance tests on the correct date e.g. illness, etc., please inform the Headteacher as soon as possible.
If girls attend the entrance tests they will be presumed to be well enough  to sit the papers.
